Abstract

This study entitled “A Study on the Speaking Ability Through Story- Retelling of the Eleventh Grade Students of SMAN 1 Amarasi Barat in the School Year 2014/2015”. It aims to answer the following questions: (1) Are the eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Amarasi Barat in the school year 2014/2015 able to speak English through story–retelling strategy? (2)What is the ability level of the eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Amarasi Barat in the school year 2014/2015 in using story retelling strategy? The objectives of the study are(1) To find out whether or not the eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Amarasi Barat in the school year 2014/2015 able to speak English through story – retelling strategy? (2) To find out the level speaking ability of the eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Amarasi Barat in the school year 2014/2015 through story-retelling. In order to solve these problems, the writer used a descriptive method. This method was used because the aims of the study was to describe the speaking ability level of the eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Amarasi Barat. The subject of the study were eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Amarasi Barat. The result of the research shows that (1) the eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Amarasi Barat are able to speak English especially in retelling a story with good pronunciation, grammatical structure and vocabulary. (2) The level of speaking ability of the eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Amarasi Barat is advance (12). (3) The areas of difficulties faced by the eleventh grade student of SMAN 1 Amarasi Barat in speaking are how to use tenses and how to put words in correct position and how to pronounce the words correctly. Based on the result of the study and the conclusion discuss above, some suggestions can be given. (1) To the English Teacher: (a) It is advisable to train the students to speak English frequently and everyday and motivate the students to read more English books in order to increase their language skills especially speaking skill. (b) The English teacher should encourage the students to speak right and tocorrect their grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation.(2) To the Eleventh Year Students: (a) In order to improve their sub-skills(grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation) the students should frequently listen to English news, English songs, and English movies. (b) They are also advised to enrich themselves with more vocabularies like reading English books, newspapers, magazines, articles and attend English symposiums.
