Abstract
This study is entitled “A STUDY ON THE ABILITY IN WRITING RECOUNT TEXT OF THE TENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA NEGERI 7 KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2014/2015”. This study was conducted to answer the following questions: 1.Are the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 7 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 able to write a recount text? 2.What is the level of ability of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 7 Kupang in writing a recount text? 3.What are the area of difficulties faced by the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 7 Kupang in writing a recount text? Whereas the objectives of the study are as follows: 1) to find out whether the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 7 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 able to write a recount text or not. 2) to know the level of ability of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 7 Kupang in writing a recount text. 3) to find out the area of difficulties faced by the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 7 Kupang in writing a recount text. The method used in this study was descriptive method. This method is used to describe the ability of tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 7 Kupang in writing recount text. The study was conducted at SMA Negeri 7 Kupang. The subject of the study was 20 students of the tenth grade students especially class A. The collected data were analyzed on four aspects of writing, they are grammar, vocabulary, mechanic, and form. The result of this study shows that (1) the tenth grade students of SMAN 7 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 are generally able to write recount text as in fact most of them are on the level of good even though some of them are still below average. (2) the level of the students‟ ability is classified as “AVERAGE” (3.61) based on the standard of measurement. (3) the area of difficulties faced by almost all the students are found in aspects of writing: vocabulary (55%), grammar(30%) and mechanics (15%). The result of the analysis also indicated that there was no student who got the excellent and very good levels of ability. There were 6 (30%) students who got Good level, 10 (50%) students who got Average level, 4(20%) student who got Below Average and no student got bad level of ability. Therefore, the researcher suggests that the English teacher of SMA Negeri 7 Kupang should give more attention on the teaching of writing recount text focusing on the teaching of grammar (past tense), and help them to improve their knowledge about vocabulary. For the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 7 Kupang should learn more grammar and vocabulary in order to improve their writing especially recount text.
