Abstract

This study is entitled: “A Study On the Speaking Ability of the Eleventh Grade Students of SMA Swasta Terakreditasi PGRI Kupang in the School Year 2015/2016”. This study was conducted to answer the following questions: (1). Are the eleventh grade students of SMA Swasta Terakreditasi PGRI Kupang in the School Year 2015/2016 able to speak English correctly or not? (2). What is the level of the students’ speaking ability? (3). What are the areas of difficulties that might be faced by the students in their speaking? The objectives of the study are: (1). To find out whether the eleventh grade students are able to speak English correctly or not (2). To find out the level of the students’ speaking ability (3). To find out the areas of difficulties that might be faced by the students in their speaking. The subject of this study was the eleventh grade students of SMA Swasta Terakreditasi PGRI Kupang in the School Year 2015/ 2016. The writer chose social class were consisting of 15 students, but two of them were absent, so only 13 students treated as the subject of this study. This study was limited in three aspects of speaking proposed by Hughes (1989) in terms of grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. In obtaining the data, the writer applied the descriptive method. The instrument used in this study was a test of oral monologue of procedure text. Based on the result of the analysis, it is found that, (1) The eleventh grade students of SMA Swasta Terakreditasi PGRI Kupang in the School Year 2015/2016 are able to speak English especially in oral monologue of making things. (2) The level of speaking ability of the eleventh grade students is advance ( ). (3) The areas of difficulties faced by the eleventh grade students in their speaking were grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. But, the most difficult area of speaking was in pronunciation. It can be seen from the result of the study, the student ability level of each element, as follows: The grand score of grammar is 59 and the average is 4.5. The grand score of vocabulary is 46 and the average is 3.5. The grand score of pronunciation is 42 and the average is 3.2. In this study, the writer analyzed the students’ errors in speaking performance were not from the students’ comprehension as whole oral monologue of procedure of making things but it was based on the errors made by the students in every sentence. Based on result of the study, the writer gives some suggestion. (1). For the English Teachers: (a) It is advisable to train the students to speak English frequently with correct their grammar, vocabularies, pronunciation. And the teacher should motivate and encourage the students to increase their language skill especially speaking skill on each aspect. It can be done by: asking the students to enrich their vocabulary through reading English books, news papers, magazines, articles and memorize the vocabularies they have got. In increasing their grammar, it can be done through: do the exercises that given by the teacher. In improving the students’ pronunciation, the teacher should ask them to listen to English news, English songs, and English movie. And crucial part of it, they have to practice their pronunciation everyday. (b). The English teacher should involves the students on every activity in the class in order to the students are able to deliver and explore their knowledge of speaking. (2) For the students: (a) In order to improve their speaking ability the students need to speak English frequently and they have to get involves on every activity in the class. (b) In order to improve their speaking skill on each aspect (grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation) It can be done by: in improving their vocabulary, the students should reading English books, news papers, magazines, articles and memorize the vocabularies they have got. In increasing their grammar, it can be done through: do the exercises that given by the teacher. In improving the students’ pronunciation, they have to listen to English news, English songs, and English movie. And crucial part of it, they have to practice their pronunciation everyday
