Abstract

This thesis is entitled, “An Analysis on the Grammatical Errors in Paragraph Writing based on the Surface Strategy Taxonomy at the Eleventh Grade Students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang in the School Year 2014/2015”. It was conducted to answer the problem statement in the following questions: (1) What types of grammatical errors are encountered by the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang in writing descriptive texts? (2) What are the most common grammatical errors might be encountered by the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang in writing descriptive texts? Based on the problems above, the objectives of the study were the following: (1) To find out the types of grammatical errors encountered by the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang in writing descriptive texts. (2) To find out the most grammatical errors encountered by the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang in writing descriptive texts. The subjects of the study are the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang especially science class group 4. The sample of the subject of the study was 20 students. The method applied in this study was descriptive method and the instrument used was students‟ writing task. The students were given opportunity to compose their writing based on the topic prepared. The classification of errors used by the writer in analyzing the data was Surface Strategy Taxonomy, consisting of 4 categories. They are Omission, Addition, Misformation and Misordering. Based on the result of the analysis showed that the errors committed by the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 were omission with the total errors 78 (47.56%) made by 20 students, misformation with the total errors 53 (32.32%) made by 18 students, addition with the total errors 25 (15.24%) made by 14 students, and misordering with the total errors 8 (4.88%) made by 7 students. The total number of error was 164. The most frequent error was omission with the total number of errors 78 (47.56%) made by 20 students. Based on the result of this study, the following were the suggestions for the teacher. The teacher should teach the students on how to write a good text especially in writing descriptive text and give the students opportunity to practice and focuse on grammar especially in the use of tenses and subject verb agreement.
