Abstract
This study is entitled“AN ANALYSIS ON GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN WRITING EXPLANATION TEXT OF TWELFTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA NEGERI 5 KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2014/2015”. This study was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) What are types of grammatical errors committed by the twelfth grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 in writing explanation text? (2) What are the most common errors committed by the twelfth grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 in writing explanation text? The objectives of this study are the following (1) To find out the types of grammatical errors committed by the twelfth grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 in writing explanation text. (2) To find out the most common errors committed by the twelfth grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 in writing explanation text. The writer used the descriptive method because it is used to describe the student’s errors in writing explanation text. The subject of this study was the twelfth grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang. They consisted of 273 students and the writer only took 17 students of social science 1 class as the sample. The writer gave them chance to write explanation text about natural phenomena. It consists of one or two paragraph. The time allocation was 60 minutes. The result of analysis shows that the twelfth grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang committed errors comprises omission errors 43 (44.32%), misformation errors 39 (40.20%), addition errors 12 (12.37%), and misordering errors 3 (3.09%). It is clearly seen that the most common error is ommision errors. A number of suggestions would be offered to many sides in accordance with their competence and responsibility: For the English Teacher of the twelfth grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang is suggested to give more attention to teach the students about grammar especially in tenses, verb, noun, adjective, conjunction, preposition, suffix and article. For the students, they are suggested to learn more about grammar of tenses, verb, noun, adjective, conjunction, preposition, suffix, and article.
