Abstract

This study is entitled: “An Analysis of Grammatical Errors in Expository Text Written by the Eleventh Grade Students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang in the School Year 2014/2015”. This study is conducted to answer the following questions: (1) do the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 commit errors in writing an expository text in English? (2) What type of grammatical error might be committed by the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 in writing an expository in English? (3) What might the most common types of grammatical errors be commited by the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 in writing expository text in English? The objectives of the study are (1) to know whether the eleventh grade students of SMA negeri 2 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 commit errors in writing an expository text in English or not, (2) to find out the types of grammatical errors in writing an expository text made by the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015, and (3) to find out the most common types of grammatical errors commited by the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 in writing an expository text. The subject of the study was the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015. The total numbers of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang were 580 students. The samples of the subject of the study were 25 students. The method applied in this study was “Descriptive Method” and the instrument used was writing task. The students were given chance to write a composition based on the topics given. The taxonomy used by the writer in analyzing the data was surface strategy taxonomy covering ommision, addition, misformation and misordering. The result of the analysis showed that the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 committed many errors in writing an expository text in English. The errors committed by the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 were omission 68 (44.16%), misformation 56 (36.37%), addition 17 (11.03%), and misordering 13 (8.44%). The total numbers of error are 154. The most frequent error was omission 68 (44.16%). Based on the result of this study, the following were the suggestions for the teacher and for the students. The teacher should teach the students on how to write a good text especially in writing an expository text and give the students chance to learn more about good text and focus on grammar, especially tenses and subject verb agreement, and the students should learn how to write a good text and focused on grammar especially tenses and subject verb agreement.
