Abstract

The title of this study is A Study on the Ability in Using Vocabulary of the Eleventh Grade Students of SMAN 6 Kupang in the School Year 2014/2015. This study was conducted to answer the following questions: 1) Are the eleventh grade students of SMAN 6 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 able to use the vocabulary or not? 2) What is the ability level of eleventh grade students of SMAN 6 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 in using vocabulary? The objectives of the study are: 1) to find out whether or not the eleventh grade students SMAN 6 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 are able to use the vocabulary. 2) to find out the ability level of eleventh grade students of SMAN 6 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 in using vocabulary. The subject of this study was the eleventh grade students of class XI Bahasa 1. In gathering the data, the writer use vocabulary test which consists of 40 test items. The result of the data analysis shows that 1) the eleventh grade students of SMAN 6 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 mostly are able to use vocabulary. It is indicated by the total number of students who passed the test. In fact, there are 18 students passed and only 2 students failed in the test. 2) the ability level of the eleventh grade students of SMAN 6 Kupang is good. The average score is 8.35. It is classified as good ability level. Based on the result of the study, the writer would like to offer some suggestions. The first is for the English teacher. The teacher should improve students‟ vocabulary mastery, especially in choosing the appropriate vocabulary to be used and also make sure that the students are introduced to the new vocabularies which are ever found by themselves by using teaching media such as picture, games, or other suitable media. The second is for the students. The result shows that the students have mastered the vocabulary with the level of mastery is fairly good. It is expected that the students can keep increasing their vocabulary in and out of school by reading more English book.
