Abstract

This study is entitled A Study of Traditional Expression of Gratitude in a Series of Uab Meto. The research problems of this research are the following, (1) what are types of expressions of gratitude terms of Uab Meto spoken by people in Insana Fafinesu of TTU Regency? (2) What are the functions and the social factors of expression of gratitude terms of Uab Meto spoken by people in Insana Fafinesu of TTU Regency? The objectives of this study are following, (1) To identify and describe types of gratitude expression term of Uab Meto spoken by people in Insana Fafinesu of TTU Regency. (2) To identify and describe the functions and social factors of expression of gratitude terms of Uab Meto spoken by people in Insana Fafinesu of TTU Regency. The data of this research were presented in form of words and sentences. The data were collected by using conversations that are conditioned in form of six big questions. The primary data (oral data) is utterances of Uab Meto, namely words, phrases, and sentences, obtained through interview, and taking notes technique. The result shows that gratitude is influenced by some types of gratitude, social factors and functions. There are eight types of gratitude in Uab Meto used and furthermore, the social factors are divided into five. They are rank of other social status, age, family relationship, gender, and transactional status. Also there are two functions of gratitudes, namely to show intimacy, and respect the person who are older than us, and the others. The finding on this research, especially in the types, functions, and social factors of gratitude are influenced by context of communication related to the situations : the place and the interlocutor. Place or circumstance can greatly influence the use of certain types of gratitude. A formal occasion usually also requires formal language during conversation. The writer’s suggestion for the researcher is to try to consider context of communication and a place or circumstances where the research location is done because these things influence the context of communication and the use of gratitude. The writer also hopes that this research can be a reference for other researchers, in developing this research, in order to add and fill the deficiencies in this research. The writer also hopes that the Insana fafinesu people will continue to maintain Uab Meto, by making Uab Meto exist in national- scale events, for example, national Celebration of historic days, in the form of takanab, speeches, natoni, dramas, or others, in maintain Uab Meto so that it will always be remembered by the younger generation, to keep better social relationship in daily communication, and also in national event.
