Abstract

This study was conducted to answer the following questions: Is the use of talking technique effective to improve students speaking ability to the eighth-graden students of SMPN 5 Kupang in the school year 2017/2018? The objective of this study is: to find out whether or not the use of talking stick effective to teach speaking to the students. There is only one class of the eighth-grade that the writer chooses to take a research there. The class was consisting of 27 students, but 7 of them were absent, so only 20 students treated as the subject of this study. In this study, the writer only focuses on the use of talking stick technique to improve students’ ability in speaking of the eighth-grade students of SMPN 5 Kupang in the school year 2017/2018. The writer used talking stick technique to teach the speaking in this research. Talking stick technique was developed by Spencer Kagan (1992:1). It is a group of study where the students learn independently from one another: each student has the same chance to express their ideas and concern with equal participant of students. The writer hold a stick first, secondly, the students start to sing a song that has taught before, the third while they are singing the stick will be given to a student’s hand and then the student will continue giving to other hand. This process keeps running until the end of song. When the song end and where the stick belongs to, the student must speak according to the material that is given by the writer. Based on the result of analysis, it was found that, (1). The use of talking stick technique is effective to improve the speaking ability level of the eighth grade students of SMPN 5 Kupang in the school year 2017/2018. In the pretest, there are only 4 students (20%) who failed. The students’ achievement increased in cycle I and II. In post-test cycle I , there were 15 students (75%) got score higher than the KKM and in cycle II, all students can passed it well (100%). Based on result of the study the writer gives some suggestions. (1). For the English teacher: Talking stick technique can be an alternative method for the teacher in teaching learning process especially in teaching speaking, so that the students will find it easy, active, enjoy and enthusiastic during teaching learning process. (2). for the students: The students must practice in speaking to develop and improve their knowledge in which we have known that speaking is one of the most difficult skill in English, so it’s needed to practice how to speak well by using variety techniques.
