Abstract

This study is entitled “A STUDY ON INDONESIAN–ENGLISH TRANSLATION: SOME PROBLEMS FACED BY THE ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA NEGERI 5 KUPANG IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2014/2015”. It was conducted in order to answer the following question: what problems are commonly encountered by the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang in the academic year 2014/2015 in translating Indonesian narrative text into English? The objective of the study is formulated as follows: to identify the problems encountered by the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang in the academic year 2014/2015 in translating Indonesian narrative text into English. In order to solve the problem, the writer used a descriptive qualitative method. This method was used because the aim of the study was to describe the problems in translating Indonesian narrative text to English. The subjects of the study were the students from XI Natural Sience 1 in SMA Negeri 5 Kupang. In collecting the data, the writer used a translation test as the instrument to have data on students’ problems in translating it. (1) The students have lexical problems and grammatical problems in translating the narrative text from Indonesian into English. The lexical problems encountered by the students are related to confusing words and transfer of individual words and then the grammatical problems encountered by the students are related to linking verb ‘Be’, the unfamiliarity of the tenses, the interference of the Indonesian word order and personal pronoun. (2) Those problems are mainly related to confusing words (50%), transfer of individual words (33%), linking verb ‘be’ (20%), unfamiliarity of tense (29%), the interference of Indonesian word order (25%) and personal pronoun (12%). From the percentage of each problem, it clarifies that the highest percentage of students’ problem is confusing words that is 50% and the lowest percentage is personal pronoun that is 12%. (3) The results of the study in the students’ translations show that students encountered the problems related to lexical problems because they tend to choose the most familiar word without considering the context in which the word is used and they tend to translate the words individually. (4) The results of the study in the students’ translations show that students encountered the problems related to grammatical problems because the students do not recognize the structure or sentence construction before they translate the sentences or the text and they also translated the sentences without considering whether or not the words are appropriated to the context. Seeing at the result of the research, the suggestion might be as follows: (1) The teacher should provide the students with a lot of reading activities and do more translation exercise so that they can improve their reading comprehension which is useful in developing translation ability. (2) It is required for the teacher to pay attention to the Indonesian sentence patterns where the students want to translate into English sentence, or where they encounter problems when translating Indonesian into English. (3) It is also expected that in doing translation, the word for word translation should be avoided and the translation should be done contextually. (4) The students should learn or read many kinds of text, not only the one given by their teacher but also other various texts xi found in various sources. (5) The students also should have a good of stock of English vocabulary that will be helpful for the students to do translation.
