Abstract

This thesis is entitled “The Effectiveness of Audio Visual Media in Improving Listening Ability of the Tenth Grade Students of SMA Negeri 1 Kupang in the School Year 2014/ 2015.” The problems of the study were formulate as follows: “(1) Is using audio visual media effective in improving listening ability of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015?. (2) How much is the increase of scores from the pre–test to the post–test for each students?”. Based on the questions above the objectives of the study can be formulated as follows: (1) To find out whether using audio visual media is effective or not in improving listening ability of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015. (2) To find out the increase of the scores from the pre–test to the post–test for each students. The method of the study was CAR, where the writer as a teacher in teaching learning process, and writer had a partner as observer in learning activities. The writer applied test, namely pre–test and post–test. She implemented two cycles. Consist of planning, implementation of the action, observation, and reflecting. The subject of the study was class X IBB I/X Bahasa I which consisted of 21 students. The present classroom action study consisted of two cycles. In gathering the data, the instruments that were used in included teaching scenario and test. The finding shows that Audio Visual Media can improve listening ability in teaching learning process. It can be seen by the result of the pre–test 51.75 and post–test I 73.25 in cycle I and post–test II 82 in cycle II. And the increase of the scores from the pre–test to the post–test is 29 %. It means that the use of the Audio Visual Media is effective to improve the listening ability. The mean figure of cycle I and cycle II showed that Audio Visual Media has developed the students’ listening ability. This comparative percentage rates clearly showed the students attitudes and motivation became higher after learning listening through that media. Therefore, the findings of the present classroom action study were predominantly valid and reliable for the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Kupang in the school year 2014/ 2015. The English teacher could use the findings of the present classroom action study to device more effective use of Audio Visual Media in teaching to improve the students’ Listening ability. Based on the result of the study the following are some suggestions that needed to be considered: (1) The English teacher is suggested to use Audio Visual Media in teaching English especially listening for young learners, since it could improve the students’ ability, motivation and enjoyment in learning process. (2) For the students who still have low achievement in listening ability items were suggested to be more concentrate in learning and be active in the classroom when the teacher was being teaching using Audio Visual Media. The students also had to practice their knowledge more than before because language would be mastered by practicing in our daily activities.
