Abstract

This study is entitled “A STUDY ON READING COMPREHENSION ABILITY OF ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA BERINGIN KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2014/2015”. It aims to answer the following questions: (1) Are the eleventh grade students of SMA Swasta Beringin Kupang able to understand what they read? (2) What is the ability level of the students in understanding a reading text? The objectives of the study are: (1) To find out whether the eleventh grade students of SMA Swasta Beringin Kupang are able to understand a reading text or not. (2) To find out the students‟ level of ability in comprehending a reading text. For this study, the writer used a descriptive method. This method was used because it was suitable for analyzing the data (students‟ answer sheets). The subjects of the study were the eleventh grade students of SMA Beringin Kupang in the school year 2014/2015. The result of the study shows that the eleventh grade students of SMA Beringin Kupang particularly in Science class, the level of ability is fairly good that is 6.6 (66%), and then the result of Social science class is 4.6 (46%) based on the standard of measurement used in this study, level of ability is Below average. So, based on the result of data analysis shows that the eleventh grade students of SMA Beringin kupang in the School Year 2014/2015 is average (56%) to comprehend reading text. Based on the result of the study the writer would like to suggest that the English teachers of SMA Beringin Kupang should give more reading practices to the students. It can be done by providing various reading texts that should be comprehended by students either in class or at home. The teachers should also help students to master the grammar and vocabulary that can help them comprehending reading text. Further, for the students who had below average and poor ability, the writer suggests the teachers to pay more attention to them in comprehending reading text in particular and learning English in general.
