Abstract
This study is entitled “A STUDY ON GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN THE COMPOSITION WRITTEN BY EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPK ST. YOSEPH KUPANG IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2013/2014”. It was conducted in order to answer the following questions: (1) what are kinds of grammatical errors in the composition committed by eighth grade students of SMPK St. Yoseph Kupang? (2) What are the most common grammatical errors in the composition committed by eighth grade students of SMPK St. Yoseph Kupang? The objectives of the study are as follows: (1) to describe and explain kinds of grammatical errors in the composition committed by eighth grade students of SMPK St. Yoseph Kupang. (2) To know the most common grammatical errors in the composition committed by eighth grade students of SMPK St. Yoseph Kupang. The writer used descriptive method. This method is used to describe systematically a situation or area of interest factually and accurately. The subject of the study was the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Yoseph Kupang, especially grade VIIIB . There were 18 students taken as the sample of this study. In collecting the data, the writer used writing test. The writer asked the students to write a composition based on topics given by the writer. The topics are my hobby, my favorite pets and my idol. The result of the test shows that grammatical errors committed by the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Yoseph Kupang in writing composition are misformation (37.21%), omission (34.30%), miscellaneous (18.02%), misordering (7.56%), and addition (2.91%). The most common grammatical error committed by the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Yoseph Kupang in writing composition is misformation. Seeing at the result of the research, the suggestion might be as follows: (1) The English teacher of the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Yoseph Kupang is expected to focus on grammar and give more writing exercises for the students to improve their writing skill. (2) The students should learn more grammar, especially the grammatical aspects regarding tenses, verbs, noun, adjectives, adverbs, and prepositions.
