Abstract

This study is entitled: A STUDY ON MIND MAPPING TECHNIQUE IN TEACHING SPEAKING SKILL FOR TENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA SUDIRMAN KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2014/2015. The study is conducted to answer the following questions: (1) Does the use of mind mapping technique can enhance the speaking ability of the tenth grade students of SMA Sudirman Kupang? (2) What is the level of the progress (enhancing) of the students’ ability in speaking? The study was conducted in order to find out whether the use of mind mapping technique can enhance or not the speaking ability of the tenth grade students of SMA Sudirman Kupang and to describe and explain the level of the progress (enhancing) of the students’ ability in speaking. This study is limited in five aspects of speaking as proposed by Hughes in terms of Pronunciation (accent), Grammar, Vocabulary, Fluency, and Comprehension. In obtaining the data, the writer applied the mind mapping technique. The purposive random sampling system was used in choosing the respondents. Actually, there are 20 students in the tenth grade (Class B) and the writer chose the students randomly by giving them the paper which is written down the topic “The Famous Place” and blankpaper. 10 students who got the written paper was the sampling of the study in order the research was more directed. The instruments that was used in this study was lesson plan, pre-test, post-test, and teacher’s observation sheet. Based on the analysis of data, the writer concludes that using Mind Mapping technique enhances students’ speaking ability of the tenth grade students of SMA Sudirman Kupang. Before the implementation, most students were not able to speak without memorizing it, but after the implementation the interest to speak in front of the class was enhanced and they did not have to memorize it. Besides that, usning Mind Mapping saved time and the students were active in speaking class. There are differences in the result of teaching speaking by using Mind Mapping and without Mind Mapping. The students’ level of speaking ability in the pre-test is intermediate level (11.7) while in the post-test the level is advance level (17.2). And based on the result of the study, the writer would like to propose some suggestions as follows; (1) The English teacher of the researched school should pay attention to students’ needs by implementing Mind Mapping to make them interest to learn English. (2) The English teacher should be more serious in helping the students to develop their speaking skill in some aspects such as pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension.
