Abstract

This study is entitled “A STUDY ON THE USE OF PRE-QUESTIONING STRATEGY TO IMPROVE READING COMPREHENSION ABILITY OF THE ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA NEGERI 5 KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2016/2017”. It was conducted in order to answer the following questions: (1) Is the use of pre-questioning strategy effective to improve reading comprehension ability of the grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang in the school year 2016/2017? (2) What is the ability level of the eleventh grade of SMAN 5 Kupangin reading comprehension after being taught using pre-questioning strategy? The objectives of the study are as follows: (1) To find out whether the use of pre-questioning strategy is effective to improve reading comprehension ability of the eleventh grade of SMAN 5Kupang is effective or not. (2) To find out the students’ level in reading comprehension ability after they are taught using pre-questioning strategy. This research was Classroom Action Research based on Kurt Lewin’s design to solve students’ problem in comprehending reading text. The Kurt Lewin’s model consists of four phases, planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The subject of the study was the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang in the school year 2016/2017 especially class XI IPS5 which consists of 20 students. This action research was conducted in two cycles. The instruments used in this study were pre-test and post test. Based on the analysis of data, the writer concludes that (1) the use of pre-questioning strategy is effective to improve reading comprehension ability level on the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang in the school year 2016/2017?(2) The ability level of reading comprehension of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang after they are taught using pre-questioning strategy is classified as “very good” with the average 88, 75. Based on the result of the study the writer would like to propose some suggestions as follows: 1) The result of the research shows that using pre-questioning strategy is effective in improving students’ reading comprehension so the English teacher is suggested to apply this strategy in his/her teaching learning process, 2) The English teacher should pay attention to students need and characteristic by using this strategy in teaching reading comprehension to make them easier in learning English, 3) Students should always be motivated to improve their reading comprehension because reading comprehension is one of the basic skills in learning a language.
