Abstract
This study is entitled “ A Study on translating Indonesian Reading Text Into English of the Eleventh Grade Students Of SMA N 2 Kupang in the School Year 2016/2017”. It was conducted to answer the following questions. (1) Is the translation from Indonesian reading text into English done by the eleventh grade students of SMA N 2 Kupang in the school year 2016/2017 good or bad? (2) What are the areas difficulties faced by the eleventh grade students of SMAN 2 Kupang in the school year 2016/2017 in translating Indonesian reading text into English? The objectives of the study are the following (1) To know whether the translation Indonesian reading text into English done by the eleventh grade students of SMA N 2 Kupang in the school year 2016/2017 is good or bad. (2) To find out the areas of difficulties faced in translating Indonesian reading text into English of the eleventh grade students of SMAN 2 Kupang in the school year 2016/2017. The writer used descriptive method to describe students translation. The subject of this study was the eleventh grade students of SMA N 2 Kupang. But for this study the writer chose XI Languange program. The total number of students in this class is 26 students, but only 20 students joined the test and 6 students were absent. In collecting the data, the writer used translation test written in Indonesian Languange entitled “Apakah Merokok baik bagi Kita?”. The students were asked to translate the text. The test consists of 11 sentences. In fact 103 (46.81%) sentences are Good and 117 (53,18%) sentences are Bad. The result of the study shows that: (1) The translation of Indonesian reading text into English of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang in the school year 2016/2017 is classified as BAD. (2) The areas of difficulties faced by the students were lack of grammatical structure of English knowledge. The students committed many grammatical mistakes regarding pluralization, wrong word order, and incomplete sentence. The wrong use of these grammatical aspect distorted the original meaning of the content. Hence, the writer provides some suggestions as the following: (1) The teacher of English needs to pay attention to the grammatical and the word choice, such as the correct word order in a sentence, in a complete sentence, and pluralization. (2) The students need to pay attention to the grammatical aspect and the word choice, such as the correct word order in a sentence, in a complete sentence, the correct of pluralization and learn more the English Grammar.
