Abstract

This study is entitled “A STUDY ON READING COMPREHENSION ABILITY OF THE TENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA NEGERI HAREKAKAE BETUN IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2016/2017”. This study was conducted in order to answer the following questions: (1) Are the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri Harekakae Betun in the school year 2016/2017 able to understand the text they read? (2) What is the ability level of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri Harekakae Betun in the school year 2016/2017 in comprehending a reading text?. The objectives of the study are: (1) to find out whether or not the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri Harekakae Betun in the school year 2016/2017 comprehend the reading text (2) to find out the ability level of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri Harekakae Betun in the school year 2016/2017 in comprehending the reading text. For this study, the writer used Descriptive Method. The subject of this study were 23 students from tenth grade students of class MIA 2 of SMAN Harekakae Betun in the school year 2016/2017. The instrument that the writer used for gathering the data was reading comprehension test. The test consisted of 30 test items of multiple choice. The result of the study shows that: (1)The tenth grade students of SMA Negeri Harekakae Betun in the School Year 2016/2017 are able to comprehend reading text literally. (2)The average of their grade is 8.53 (91.30%). Based on the standard of measurement used in this study, ability level of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri Harekakae Betun in the School Year 2016/2017 is good. Based on the result of the study the writer would like to suggest the English teachers and the students of SMA Negeri Harekakae Betun. The teacher should to give more practice to the students. It can be done by providing various reading texts that should be comprehended by students either in class or at home. They should also help them to master the grammar and vocabulary that can help them comprehending reading text and for the students who had below average they can try to do more exercises in English reading text. The writer also suggests them to learn more about grammar and vocabulary that can help them to comprehend reading text.
