Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe students’ mathematical problem solving abilities SMP. This type of research is qualitative descriptive research. The subjects in this study were three students of class VIIA SMP Negeri 20 Kupang city. the theer students who were selected were based on the level of low and medium ability, the three selected students were given a problem solving ability tes and interview. Research provides problem solving assingnments and interviews to each subject. Checking the validity of the data using triangulation. Data obtsined from the research results are as follows: subjects with high levels of ability and needing concepts and formulas, expressing steps in working on the problem, and at TPM 1 are unable to connect questions with every day life, but in the TPM 2 problem they are unable to connect the problem with everyday life. Subjects with a level of ability are able to prove concepts and formulas, express steps in working on problems, and cannot connect questions to everyday life. Subjects with low ability are able to prove concepts and formulas, express steps in working on a problem, and are unable to connect questions with every day life.
