Abstract
The problems of the research as follow: 1) Is there significant influence of using realia on speaking skill at the tenth grade students of SMA Kristen 1 Kupang? 2) How to improve the ability in speaking using realia in the tenth grade students of SMA Kristen 1 Kupang? 3) What is the level of the ability in speaking using realia in the tenth grade students of SMA Kristen 1 Kupang? The aims of research are the following. 1) To find out the significant influence of using realia on speaking skill of the tenth grade students of SMA Kristen 1 Kupang. 2) To find out whether the students’ speaking ability achievement can be improved when realia is implemented. 3) To find out the level of the ability in speaking using realia of the tenth grade students of SMA Kristen 1 Kupang. Based on the observation, there were some problems in teaching and learning speaking such as many students still have difficulty to speak well; afraid of making mistakes in speaking English both in structuring and pronouncing the words; less of vocabulary, and became receptive rather than productive. To solve those problems, the researcher implemented realia as a media for speaking activity. The study was classroom action research. It was conducted in two cycles. The subject of the research was the tenth grade students of SMA Kristen 1 Kupang especially Class X IPA1 . The class consist of 22 students, 15 girls and 7 boys. In collecting the data, the writer used test and non-test. In the pre-test the writer used oral test. And then, in the post-test the writer asked the students to describe fruits. In non- xi test the writer used observation. The writer analized the quantitative data and qualitative data. The result of this study shows the following tests. The significant influence of using realia are: 1) Using Realia to improve students speaking ability. It could be seen by comparing in every cycle. The average scores of the post test in cycle 1 was 2,0 or elementary. 2) Using Realia was implemented in cycle 2 and the average scores of post-test was 4,0 or advance. It means that there was significant difference in grade of speaking test achieved by the students after they have been taught using realia to describe something. Speaking ability is improved when realia was used. This was concluded because there was an improvement on speaking scores from post test 1 to post test 2. The level of the ability in speaking using realia of begginer until advance, it means that using realia to describe something was effective on improves the students speaking ability. So the writer concluded by using realia, the atmosphere of teaching learning English is different. The students became more active in teaching learning process and give more attention to the lesson. They were attracted to do the tests and enthusiatic when they performed their speaking ability. They can pronounce the words correctly, understand the meaning of words, and use the appropriate vocabulary. Based on the result of the research, the writer want to give suggestion for English teachers and for future researcher to develop this media in teaching English other skills, such as; writing and reading or teaching speaking in different level of the students because by using realia make the students understand easily about the lesson and the class becomes conductive.
