Abstract

This research is entitled "ANALYSIS OF GRAMMATICAL SPOKEN ERROR MADE BY THE EIGHTH-GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI 10 KUPANG FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2022/2023". This research was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) What types of grammatical errors are made by students in speaking English? (2) What is the most common grammatical error made by eighth-grade students in speaking English? The aims of this study were to (1) find out the types of grammatical errors made by students in speaking English and (2) find out the most common grammatical error made by eighth-grade students in speaking English. The researcher uses the Qualitative method. The subject of this research is class VIII A students at SMP Negeri 10 Kupang. They consist of 25 students as the research sample. The time allocation is 90 minutes. The results of the analysis show that (1) class VIII A students of SMP Negeri 10 Kupang made grammatical errors in Omission 7 (12%), Addition 26 (46%), Misformation 20 (35%), and Misordering 3 (5%). (2) It is evident that the most common error is Addition Error 26 (46%). Based on these results, the researcher would like to suggest that: 1. English teachers must explain grammar well and clearly so that students understand it. 2. The English teacher should include speaking exercises that improve the ability to use the simple past tense.
