Abstract

This study aims to describe the profile of the mathematical problem solving ability of students in class VIII B SMPK St. Familia Kupang on SPLDV material based on Polya's steps. This type of research is a qualitative research designed to determine students' mathematical problem solving abilities in SPLDV material. The subjects in this study were 3 class VIII B students of SMPK St. Familia. Subjects were selected based on the results of the problem-solving ability test on the SPLDV material. Based on the results of the problem solving tests, they were grouped into 3 groups, namely students with high, medium and low solving abilities. Data collection techniques in the form of tests and interviews. The instrument used in this study was a problem-solving test which consisted of 2 questions. After being given the test, interviews were then conducted with the subject to further explore students' problem-solving abilities and clarify the results that had been written. The results of this study are high ability students are able to carry out all stages of problem solving based on Polya, namely understanding the problem, making plans, carrying out plans with appropriate steps for solving and re-checking. Students with moderate ability in solving problems based on Polya's steps only carry out 2 stages of problem solving, namely being able to understand the problem, make plans but are not yet optimal, but have not been able to carry out the settlement plan correctly because they are still wrong in arithmetic operations and have not been able to carry out the stages of re-checking. Students with low ability in solving problems based on Polya's steps only carry out 1 stage of problem solving, namely being able to understand the problem, making plans but not yet optimal, not being able to carry out a settlement plan with the right steps and not being able to carry out the stages of checking again.
