Abstract

A similar ensemble is a presentation of musical instrument playing performed by a group of people using one type of musical instrument. The background of the problem found by researchers at the research location is that there are several students whose fingers are still stiff, less compact, less cooperation between players, less attention to the balance of sound between instruments, and less proficient in reading sheet music. The formulation of research problems carried out to achieve the objectives of this study are (1) how the process of improving guitar ensemble playing (2) what techniques are used to improve guitar ensemble playing (3) whether the demonstration and drill methods are effective in improving guitar ensemble playing. This study aims to improve the guitar ensemble playing skills of XI grade students at SMAN 3 Kupang using drill and demonstration methods by focusing on the song model "You Raise Me Up". This research was conducted using a class action research design involving 6 grade XI students as research subjects. The learning process was conducted in eight meetings using drill and demonstration methods. The drill method was used to strengthen students' hand coordination and speed in playing chords and melodies required in guitar ensembles. The demonstration method was used to provide direct examples and instructions to students on how to play appropriately and expressively. Data was collected through observations of student performance during the learning process, tests of guitar ensemble playing skills before and after the intervention, and interviews to obtain information about the obstacles faced by students and the factors that cause them. The results showed a significant improvement in students' guitar ensemble playing skills after the application of drill and demonstration methods in eight learning processes. Based on the results of the research, it can be concluded that after following the process of this research, the students of class XI SMAN 3 Kupang finally have the skills in presenting the ensemble music game well. Thus the drill and demonstration method helps students understand and improve the skills of playing guitar ensemble.
