Abstract

This research is aimed to know the character and characterization of Erin Guwell as main character by analyzing the evidence from the dialogues and her action in film or movie. Knew about what the character and characterization of Erin Gruwell the writer used the method in this writing is descriptive qualitative. The writer collect the data by script, watching the film and marking them. The writer used the Freedom Writer movie directed by Richard LaGravenese released in 2007. The writer focused the dialogues of the film, and then followed by analyzing the character and characterization through agreeableness, conscientiousness and neuroticism of personality traits theory by Paul Costa and Robert McCrae. In this analysis, the writer found out that final result about the character and characterization of Erin Gruwell as main character. Erin Gruwell is a protagonist character and round character. Erin Gruwell is a teacher at Woodrow Wilson High School, a wife of Scott Casey, a bra seller at department store and hotel concierge. From the theory used, the writer found personality traits of Erin Gruwell are agreeableness, conscientiousness and neuroticism. From the analysis, the writer concluded that Erin Gruwell as main character has a protagonist and round character. She has much good characterization than negative one in the movie from the beginning of story until the end of story. Therefore, the writer focused on good characterization viewed from agreeableness and conscientiousness of personality traits theory. This research also strengthened the most common type of the main character in the film or movie that came in protagonist and round character.
