Abstract

In learning English, students find it difficult to understand the use of grammatical forms. Therefore, students often make errors. This research is entitled "An Error Analysis Of Using Simple Past Tense In Writing Of Recount Text Of Ninth Grade Student At Smpk St. Familia Kupang.” This research was conducted to (1) identify the types of errors in the use of simple past tense made by ninth-grade C students in writing Recount Text and (2) to find out the most dominant simple past tense errors made by ninth-grade C students in writing Recount Text. The subjects of this research were 20 ninth-grade C students. This research was conducted at Smpk St. Familia Kupang using qualitative methods. To analyze the data, this research uses a surface strategy taxonomy based on the theory of Dulay et al. The research results showed that there were 81 errors found in students' writing, consisting of 37% errors in omission, 8% errors in addition, 43% errors in misformation, and 11% errors in misordering. Of the four types of errors found, misformation errors were the most prevalent errors made by students.
