Abstract
The background of this research is based on the fact that classical guitar learning in academic settings generally still relies on standard notation, which often becomes an obstacle for beginner students due to its high level of difficulty. This creates a barrier in the learning process of classical guitar techniques, as students have limited ability to read guitar scores that use standard notation. To address this challenge, tablature was chosen as a more practical and easily understood alternative medium. Based on this, the research problem is formulated as: "What are the processes and outcomes of using tablature as a learning medium for classical guitar techniques through the piece 'Romance de Amor' for second-semester students of the Music Education Study Program at UNWIRA?" The purpose of the study is to explore and describe the learning process and outcomes of using tablature as a medium for classical guitar technique instruction through the piece Romance de Amor among second-semester students of the Music Education Study Program at UNWIRA. This research adopts a qualitative approach using a field action method. The research subjects consist of five second-semester students selected based on availability and willingness to participate intensively in the learning process. Data collection techniques include direct observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation of practice sessions. The learning process consists of several stages: introduction to tablature, basic technique exercises, mastery of sections of Romance de Amor, and final performance evaluation. The results show that the use of tablature significantly helps students in understanding and practicing classical guitar playing techniques, as it allows them to focus on finger positioning and playing flow without being burdened by the complexities of music theory. Additionally, students showed consistent improvement in aspects of playing technique, rhythm and tempo accuracy, musical interpretation, and confidence in performance. In conclusion, tablature is an effective and relevant learning medium for classical guitar instruction, especially for beginner students, and is expected to serve as a reference for music educators in developing more adaptive teaching approaches and fostering innovation in instrumental music instruction in academic settings.
