Abstract
Chord progression is a series of chord changes that create harmony in music. The formulation of the problem is how the process of learning chord progressions in guitar accompaniment based on the family chord theory to accompany songs for students interested in guitar as well as the obstacles experienced and the solutions provided. This study aims to determine the process of learning chord progressions in guitar accompaniment based on the family chord theory to accompany songs for students interested in guitar as well as the obstacles experienced and the solutions provided. This study is qualitative, with a field action method. The way to obtain data is through observation, interviews and documentation. This study was carried out in 3 stages: the initial, core, and final stages which were carried out over seven meetings. Each song learning the students began by playing the family chord according to the basic notes of the song after that continued by playing the song in a slow tempo to the original tempo of the song. During the learning process, students interested in music experienced difficulties in introducing materials such as: scales and intervals, chords, chord family sequences and chord symbols, progressive chord changes in songs. These difficulties were overcome by doing repeated exercises until they were able to understand well. The results obtained were that students could understand the concept of scales and intervals, chords, chord families and chord symbols, and could accompany the Bolelebo song using existing major and minor chords. These results indicate that learning chord progressions in guitar accompaniment using chord family theory provides a positive contribution to guitar learning at SMPN 6 Kupang Tengah Satu Atap.
