Abstract
Gong Waning is a traditional musical instrument originating from Sikka Regency, deeply rooted in the local culture and commonly used in various traditional ceremonies and artistic performances. Among the rhythmic patterns found in Gong Waning performances, the Todu rhythm stands out due to itsfast tempo and energetic rhythmic structure. However, academic studies on the playing techniques of Gong Waning in the Todu rhythm remain limited, particularly concerning its performance structure and the specific roles of each instrument. In response to this gap, the present study focuses on three key issues: (1) the playing techniques used in Gong Waning's Todu rhythm, (2) the structure and form of its musical presentation, and (3) the role of Sanggar Bliran Sina in preserving this traditional practice. The aim of this study is to describe in detail the playing techniques of Gong Waning in the Todu rhythm, to analyze its musical arrangement, and to explore the contribution of Sanggar Bliran Sina in transmitting this cultural tradition to younger generations. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with an ethnographic approach. Data were collected through field observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation at Sanggar Bliran Sina, located in Watublapi. The collected data were then analyzed descriptively to provide a comprehensive understanding of both the technique and the performance structure.Findings indicate that the performance of Gong Waning in the Todu rhythm involves coordination among several types of gongs, including Gong Biwing, Gong Beweng, Gong Ina Na’a Ha, Gong Upo, Gong Hagong, and Gong Udong. The performance typically begins with Letar (Sa’ur) as the tempo setter, followed by the gradual inclusion of other instruments. Dodor and Waning play crucial roles in reinforcing rhythm and controlling musical dynamics. Sanggar Bliran Sina plays a central role in preserving this art form through regular practice sessions and cultural education for the younger generation This study is expected to contribute to the preservation of Indonesia’s traditional music and to enrich the discourse in the field of ethnomusicology, especially within the context of local cultural heritage in Sikka
