Abstract

This research is entitled The Meaning of Symbols in Kataga Dance at Uma Bakul Dance Studio. The purpose of this research is to examine the symbolic meaning contained in the costumes in the kataga dance. This research uses a qualitative descriptive analysis method, where researchers collect data through interviews and observations, and documentation. This study uses the theory of symbolic interaction. This perspective considers each individual within himself has a cultural essence, interacts in the midst of his social community, and produces meanings or thoughts that are agreed upon collectively. Symbolic interaction exists because basic ideas in forming meanings that come from the human mind (mind) about the self, and its relationship in the midst of social interactions, and the ultimate goal is to meditate, and interpret meanings in the midst of society (society) where the individual lives. The results of this research are that each element in the kataga dance has a deep symbolic meaning, which reflects the social, spiritual, and identity values of the community and the meaning of the symbols not only functions as a medium of artistic expression, but also as a means of preserving traditions and cultural communication between generations.
