Abstract
Film can represent a culture, and culture in film is represented in the form of moving images composed of individual frames. There are many cultures represented in a film, one of which is the film "Avatar: The Way of Water". This study aims to examine how the culture of the Bajo people is represented in the film Avatar: The Way of Water, thereby proving James Cameron's statement that the Metkayina tribe was inspired by the Bajo people. Thisstudy uses Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis method to analyze the denotation, connotation, and mythological meanings of selected scenes. The theories used in this study are film, representation, and culture. This study finds that in the scenes of the film Avatar: The Way of Water analyzed using Roland Barthes' semiotic method, there are similarities in cultural elements between the Metkayina tribe and the Bajo people in Desa Rayuan Kelapa, Kab. Lembata, East Nusa Tenggara. Thus, the conclusion of this study is that the Bajo people and the Metkayina tribe share similarities in cultural elements, including knowledge systems for survival by utilizing marine resources, technological systems and living equipment, such as the use of canoes as a means of transportation in daily activities, and the shape of houses built above water. In terms of economic systems, with better diving abilities, both the Metkayina tribe and the Bajo people can better utilize marine resources such as clams (kima), sea cucumbers, and other marine biota that can be traded. In terms of religious systems, the Metkayina tribe believes in Tsahik, a spiritual figure in Na'vi culture, while the Bajo people still believe in Sandro (a shaman) in spiritual processes, including traditional healing practices.
