Abstract
The thesis entitled “The Application of Legato and Vocal Fry Techniques in Solo Singing with the Song Always Remember Us This Way for Students in the Vocal Extracurricular at SMPK Phaladhya Waiwerang, East Adonara” was written by Petrus Sili Tokan (17120007), Study Program of Music Education, Widya Mandira Catholic University Kupang, under the supervision of Flora Ceunfin, S.Sn., M.Sn. as the first advisor and Paskalis Romanus Langgu, S.Sn., M.Arts. as the second advisor. Vocal is the main medium for conveying messages, emotions, and expressions through the human voice. Good vocal quality requires mastery of techniques, including legato, which connects notes smoothly and continuously, and vocal fry, which produces a low, creaky sound that adds emotional nuance. The song Always Remember Us This Way by Lady Gaga was chosen as a model because of its expressive melody and the challenges it presents in applying these two techniques. The main problems of this research are the students’ limited mastery of legato and vocal fry techniques and their lack of self-confidence in performing solo in public. The research questions are focused on: (1) the process of learning legato and vocal fry techniques through the song, (2) the difficulties faced by the students, and (3) the strategies used to overcome these difficulties. The objectives of this research are to describe the process of applying legato and vocal fry techniques, identify the students’ difficulties, and determine effective strategies to overcome them. This research is beneficial for the researcher as scientific experience, for the Music Education Study Program as an academic reference, for the students of SMPK Phaladhya to enhance their vocal skills, and for readers as literature for the development of vocal techniques. This study employed a qualitative approach using Field Action Research (FAR). Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation over eight meetings with three selected students. The research stages included concept understanding, breathing exercises, etude practice, application of techniques in song phrases, and comprehensive evaluation. The findings show that through structured training with drill and imitation methods, students were able to improve their mastery of legato and vocal fry techniques. The main difficulties encountered were related to breath control, articulation stability, and phrasing. Strategies to overcome these included repeated drills, individual approaches, and emphasis on breathing and articulation techniques. Overall, the study proves that the application of vocal techniques through popular song models can enhance students’ vocal skills as well as increase their confidence in performing solo in public.
