Abstract

The main problem in this study is how to understand the concept of junior high school students based on mathematical perceptions. The purpose of this study was to determine the understanding of the concept of junior high school students based on mathematical perceptions. This type of research is a qualitative descriptive study with data collection techniques carried out by giving instruments of perception, problem solving tasks to students and interview guidelines. After knowing each other’s perceptions on these students, namely positive and negative perceptions. Each student working on the problem solving task then directly interviewed about the results of the work. In this study, two male students with different perceptions were selected. The assesment of students’ understanding of concepts is based on three indicators namely translation, interpretation, and extrapolation.The result of this study indicate that the understanding of the concept of type two students positif and negative perceptions have the same level of ability, but they work on the problem solving task is slightly different time duration. Based on the result of this study it is expected that teachers should also pay attention to students perception in order to more quickly capture information and lessons.
