Abstract

This study focuses on the types of code-switching, functions of code-switching, relationship between types and functions of code switching. The purpose of this research is to find out the types of code switching, the possible function of code switching, and the relationship between types and functions performed by the 6th semester students of English Education of Widya Mandira Catholic University Kupang in group discussions.The method used is descriptive qualitative. To obtain the data, the writer uses observation and interview. The data are transcribed and classified. Coding and labeling of each data sample will be utilized according its potential type. All the codes would be screened and the data labeled with similar codes would be grouped together. Code of similar nature then would be classified in major categories to suggest the types and functions of code-switching. The result of the classification of the types and function would be used to find out the relationship of types and functions of code switching. In group discussion, there are 18 utterances in group discussion which are found by researcher. There are 3 types of code switching: tag switching, inter-sentential code switching, and intrasentential code switching found in the group discussions. Besides, there are 3 functions are found in group discussion: expressive function, referential function, and phatic function. Students used tag switching only for phatic function and they used inter-sentential for referential and phatic function. They also used intrasentential code switching for referential function and expressive function.
