Abstract

This study was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) What are the errors made by the eleventh-grade students of a senior high school in Malaka while writing a descriptive writing? (2) What is the most common error committed by the eleventh-grade students of a senior high school in Malaka while writing a descriptive writing? The objectives of this study are as follows, (1) To find out the errors in writing descriptive writing made by the eleventh-grade students of a senior high school in Malaka. (2) To find out the most common errors committed by the eleventh- grade students of a senior high school in Malaka while writing descriptive writing. The writer used the descriptive method. It was used to describe the students’ errors in descriptive writing. The subject of this study was the eleventh-grade students of a senior high school in Malaka in the school year 2020/2021. The total number of the students is 80. By using purposive sample the writer only chose XI IPA consisting of 15 students to become the respondents of this study. In collecting the data, the writer prepared some possible topics and the students may choose one to write a descriptive text. The time allocation was 90 minutes. The result of the analysis shows that: (1) The eleventh-grade students of a senior high school in Malaka committed errors. The total number of the errors committed by the students is 91. It covers 72 (79.12%) of misformation errors, 9 (9.89%) of omission errors, 8 (8.79%) of addition errors, and 2 (2.19%) of misordering errors. (2) It is clearly seen that the most common error is misformation errors. A number of suggestions would be offered to many sides in accordance with their competence and responsibility. The English teacher of the eleventh-grade students of a senior high school in Malaka is suggested to give more attention to teach the students about grammar, vocabularies, and how to write a good descriptive text. The students are suggested to learn more about structure, to be, adjective, conjunction, preposition and tenses.
