Abstract

This study aims to describe the understanding of the concepts of junior high school students based on their mathematical abilities on the material of flat (rectangular) shapes. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The selection of research subjects was carried out based on the results of discussions between researchers and subject teachers by looking at the value of students math report cards. Three subjects were selected and categorized into three categories, namely the category of students with high mathematical abilities, students with moderate mathematical abilities, and students with low mathematical abilities. The research instrument was in the form of 2 essay test questions and interview guidelines. The results showed that students with high mathematical abilities were able to restate a concept, were able to classify objects according to certain properties according to the concept, were able to give examples or distinguish examples from non-examples, were able to present concepts in various forms of mathematical representation, and were able to use, utilize, and choose a particular procedure or operation. Students with moderate math abilities are able to restate a concept, are able to classify objects according to certain properties according to the concept, are able to give example or distinguish examples from non-examples, are less able to present concepts in various forms of mathematical representation, and are less able to use, utilize, and choose a specific procedure or operation. Meanwhile, students with low math abilities are able to restate a concept, are able to classify objects according to certain properties according to the concept, are unable to give examples or distinguish examples from non-examples, are unable to present concepts in various forms of mathematical representation and are unable to use, utilize, and choose a particular procedure or operatio.
