Abstract

The research is entitled “An Analysis on Grammatical Errors in writing Descriptive Paragraph of the Eleventh Grade Students of SMAN 5 Kupang in the School Year 2014/2015”. It was conducted to answer questions stated in the problem statements of this study: (1) What are the types of the grammatical errors committed by the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang in writing descriptive paragraph? (2) What are the most common types of grammatical errors committed by the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang in writing descriptive paragraph? The objectives of this research are: (a) To find out the types of grammatical errors committed by the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang in writing descriptive paragraph and (b) To find out the most common types of grammatical errors committed by the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang in writing descriptive paragraph. The subject of this research was the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang, especially the Language class students. The total number of the eleventh language class students was 13 students, but when the writer did his research there were two students absent, so the writer just took 11 students as samples in doing his research. In doing this study the writer used descriptive method. In writing descriptive paragraph, the writer asked them to write a descriptive paragraph that consisted of five to ten sentences and they did this in 90 minutes. The students’ writing was analyzed using surface strategy taxonomy covering omission, addition, misformation and misordering. The total of errors made by the eleventh grade students was 119 errors. There are 69 (58.03%) omission errors, 33 (27.73%) misformation errors, 11 (9.24%) addition errors and 6 (5%) misordering errors. Based on the result of this study the most common types of errors made by the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang in writing descriptive paragraph was omission 69 (58.03%) and the least common types of errors made by the eleventh grade students was misordering 6 (5%). In this research the writer suggested the English teacher and the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang that (1) The English teacher of SMAN 5 Kupang especially the English teacher of the eleventh grade students of language class is suggested to teach or explain more on how to write a descriptive paragraph correctly especially in grammar in terms of how to use tenses, vocabulary, and subject verb agreement correctly, in order that the students will become familiar in using grammar properly and (2) The eleventh grade of Language class students are suggested to learn more on grammar, especially the use of to be, pronoun, and tenses, because by studying grammar properly the errors in using grammar in writing descriptive paragraph will be decreased.
