Abstract

This research was conducted to describe students' verbal abilities in solving problems of story problems in material systems of two-variable linear equations. This research was carried out on students of SMP Negeri 13 Kupang class VIII A, amounting to 28 students. This research begins by determining the subject of the study. The research subjects were determined based on the value of the mathematics assignment to choose 3 students from 28 students who had the highest score as the subject of the study. For the next three subjects were interviewed using interview guidelines that were prepared based on indicators of verbal ability. The validity of the data uses time triangulation. Based on the results of the study showed that the subject KH turned out to be able to respond to each question, be able to interpret the problem by using his own sentence, be able to summarize the problem objectives effectively, able to explain the idea of solving the problem plan, be able to explain the resolution steps in accordance with the problem, and able to provide explanation regarding other alternative answers, as well as being able to conclude the results of the resolution of the problem in accordance with the problem. On the GO subject: able to respond to each question, be able to interpret problems using their own sentences, be able to summarize the objectives of the problem effectively, be able to explain the idea of the problem solving plan, unable to explain the steps according to the problem, and able to explain alternatives another answer, but able to conclude the results of the problem solving in accordance with the problem. On the subject of MB: able to respond to each question, able to interpret the problem by using his own sentence, not able to summarize the problem objectives effectively, able to explain the idea of preparing a problem solving plan, unable explaining the steps to complete it according to the problem, and not being able to provide an explanation regarding other alternative answers, and unable to conclude the results of the resolution of the problem in accordance with the circumstances the land. Thus it can be concluded that the three subjects have different verbal abilities in dealing with problems in the material system of two variable linear equations.
