Abstract

The study is entitled “A Study on the Ability in Writing Procedure Text of the Eighth Grade Students of SMPN 5 kupang in the School Year 2018/2019”. This study was held to find the answers of two questions. (1) Are the eighth grade students of SMPN 5 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 able to write procedure text? (2) What is the ability level of the SMPN 5 Kupang in writing procedure text? This study focuses on grammar, content, form, vocabulary and mechanics. The method used in this study was descriptive method. The aim of the method is to explain a situation which is observed while this research done. The subjects of this study were the SMPN 5 Kupang. The total number of class V111 A was 30 students but the writer only chose 20 students randomly as the sample of this study. The instrument used for this research was writing a procedure text. The data was gathered and analyzed. The result of this study indicated that the eighth grade students of SMPN 5 Kupang especially class V111 A in the school year 2018/2019, are able write procedure text. Their level of ability is classified as (20,2 ) “GOOD “Based on the result of this study, there are 2 (20%) students who got score highest score 26-30, which is classified as excellent. 6 students who got score 21-25 (30%), which is classified as very good, 11 students who get score 16-20 (55%), which is classified as Good and 1(5%) student who get score 11-15 is classified Average, there are no students who get score 6-10 (0%) below average. And there was no student get score 5 (0%) which is classified bad. Therefore, the writer suggests the English teacher of SMPN 5 Kupang should give more attention on the teaching of content especially to arrange the sentence and teaching of grammar especially simple present tense, article, the use of linking verb to be, the use of pronoun, teaching of vocabulary. while the students should pay attention on learning of content especially to arrange the sentence, and pay attention on learning grammar especially simple present tense, article, the use of linking verb to be, the use of pronunciation and spellin.
