Abstract
This study is entitled “A STUDY ON READING COMPREHENSION ABILITY OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI 5 KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2018/2019.” The study was conducted to answer the following question. (1) Are the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 able to understand the texts they have read? (2) What is the ability level of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Kupang in understanding the text that they read? The objectives of the study are (1) to find out whether the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Kupang are able to understand the text they have read. (2) to find out the ability level of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Kupang in the understanding the texts they have read. There were 21 students in the class. The instrument used was a 30 narrative reading test items in form of multiple choices tests. The result of the study shows that (a) the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Kupang are able to understand the text that they read. (b) Their ability level is “fairly good” with the total score 7.471. Based on the result of the study, the writer suggest that in reading comprehension, (1) the teachers SMP Negeri 5 Kupang should give more explanation and exercises about narrative text and giving more exercises in form multiple choice test. (2) The result of the student’s ability is good thus the practices can be done in the classroom or at home by doing homework so their level of ability can be better.
