Abstract
This study is entitled “An Analysis on the Listening Ability of the Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 5 Kupang in the School Year 2018/2019”. This study was conducted to answer the following question: (1) What is the ability level of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Kupang in filling in the missing words and answer the questions when listening to the English songs? (2) What might be the diffilculties found by the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Kupang in filling in the missing words and answer the questions when listening to the English songs? The main objectives of this study are: (1) to find out the ability of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Kupang in filling in the missing words and answer the questions when listening to the English song and (2) To find out the difficulties level of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Kupang in filling in the missing words and answer the questions when listening to the English song. Descriptive method was effect to discribe the students, ability level in listening. The subject of the study was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019. While the number of the subject was 23 students. In collecting data, the writer gave two songs. The songs were Fight Song and Talking to the Moon. The result of the data analysis shows that the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Kupang are able to fill the mising words and answer the questions when listening to the English songs. Their level of ability is “Fairly Good” (7.04). Besides, it can be seen that there are 8 students (43%) at good level, 3 students (13%) at very good level, 5 students (21%) at fairly good level, 3 students (13%) at average level, 1 student (4%) at below average level, 1 student (4%) at poor level, and also 2 students (8%) at very poor. There was no students in excellent level, bad level, and very bad level. Based on the result above, the writer could suggest the following things (1) The English teachers should be creative in teaching listening and they must balance all skills that they teach, not only paying attention to reading. but also to listening, speaking, and writing (based on the writer observation).The teacher should teach about vocabulary like homonyms, because the difficulties of listening dealing with sound of words/vocabularies (2) The students can increase their listening ability by listening to English monologs, conversation, broadcastings so they can learn more words/vocabularies.
