Abstract
This study is entitled: A STUDY ON THE USE OF AUTHENTIC MATERIALS TO IMPROVE SPEAKING ABILITY OF THE SEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI 1 KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2017/2018. The study was conducted to answer the questions: (1) How are Authentic Materials used to improve speaking ability of the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Kupang in the school year 2017/2018? (2) To what extent is the use of Authentic Material can improve speaking ability of the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Kupang in the school year 2017/2018? The objectives of the study are: (1) To describe the use of Authentic Material to improve speaking ability of the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 1 Kupang in the school year 2017/2018. (2) To find to what extent of the use of Authentic Materials that can improve the speaking ability of the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Kupang in the school year 2017/2018. Assessing students speaking performance is focused in three aspects of speaking as proposed by Hughes in terms of Pronunciation, Grammar, and Vocabulary. In obtaining the data, the writer applied the Classroom Action Research method. The purposive sampling system was used in choosing the respondents for this study. There are fourteen(14) classes for Seventh grade and the writer chose the VII A and there are 32 students in the class. The writer chose the students by their attendance. Those that went to the class and active were the sample of the study. The instrumets used in this study was Cycle I, classroom performance, Cycle II, lesson plans, and observation sheet. Based on the data analysis, the writer concludes that (1) The way of Authentic Materials was used to improve speaking skill of narrative text of the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Kupang in the school year 2017/2018 is through giving them a story and asking them to listen on the speaker which is the tool used in Authentic Materials and giving them chance to elaborate their ideas based on the story given, then presenting the story. (2) The improvement of speaking skill of the seventh grade students was getting better being taught using Authentic Materials and there were significant differencies in the result of teaching speaking by using Authentic Materials in Cycle I and Cycle II. The class average score of speaking in the cycle I is 3.15 classified as intermediate level while in the cycle II class average score is 4 classified as advance level. There is feedback between the presenter and the listener after presentation, not only that but the researcher helped them by giving them the treatment during the process of teaching and learning, giving motivation and support in doing individual presentation in front of the classroom. The cycle I and cycle II was given after they were taught with the material through Authentic Materials. Based on the result of the study, the writer would like to offer some suggestions as follow: 1) The English teacher should allocate more time for the students by giving whatever story or subject and should give the chance for the students to prepare their ideas before making the presentation. 2) The students should practice more in speaking. 3) For other researcher, the result of this study can be used as an additional reference with different discussion.
