Abstract
This study was conducted to answer the following questions: (1). Is the use of describing cartoon pictures as a media able to improve students speaking ability to the eighth grade student of SMP N 5 Kota Kupang in the school year 2018/2019? (2). What is speaking ability level of the eighth grade students of SMP N 5 Kota Kupang in the school year 2018/2019? The objectives of the study are: (1). To know if the use of cartoon pictures can help in improving the speaking ability of eight grade students of SMP N 5 Kota Kupang. (2). To Find out the speaking ability level of the eighth grade students of SMP N 5 Kota Kupang in the school year 2018/2019.Descriptive method was applied to describe the students’ ability level in speaking. The subject of the study was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019. While the number of the subject is 25 but only 20 students were treated as the subject of the study. The instrument used in this study was a test of describing cartoon picture series. This study was limited in three aspects of speaking are: grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. Based on the result of the analysis, the writer found that, (1) The eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 are able to speak English especially in oral describing cartoon picture series. (2) The level of speaking ability of the eighth grade students is Very good (15.6). It can be seen from the result of the study, the student ability level of each element, as follow: Score of grammar is 104 and the average is 5.2. Score of vocabulary is 108 and the average is 5.4. Score of pronunciation is 100 and the average is 5. Based on the result, the writer gives some suggestions. (1) The English teacher should be advisable to train the students to speak English in front of class in presenting something like describe picture or the other material, and motivate the students in order to read more to increase their language skill. (2) The students should try to improve their pronunciation, by listening to the radio, song and TV programs which use English. They are also advised to enrich themselves with more vocabularies, such as by reading English book. In the classroom if student do not understand yet what their English teacher teaches, they should ask their English teacher.
