Abstract

This study was conducted to answer the following questions: (1). Are the Students of the eleventh grade of SMAN 4 Kupang able to speak based on the reading text? (2). What is their level of speaking ability of the eleventh grade students of SMAN 4 Kupang?. This study was conducted in order to find out whether the eleventh grade student of SMAN 4 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 are able to speak English or not with correct grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation and the level of their speaking ability. In obtaining the data, the writer applied descriptive qualitative method. The data taken place in SMAN 4 Kupang of the eleventh grade students especially in class IPS 1. The writer chose 20 students from 37 students as the subject of the study. The instrument used in this study was interview. The students were interviewed one by one and all the sentences were recorded. The analysis showed the collected score of the 20 students is 325 and their ability level is 13,05 or “very good”. Based on the analysis of the data, the writer concludes that the eleventh grade students especially class IPS 1 are able to speak English and their ability was classified into excellent level. The suggestion to English Teacher, It is advisable to train the students to speak English in class the teacher has to pay attention in these three aspects grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation to improve students’ speaking in the future. For the students, for better communication, the students have to improve their pronunciation by listening to the radio and TV program which uses English. They are also advised to enrich the stock of vocabulary such as by reading English book or magazine.
