Abstract

Raraun is a traditional musical instrument of the people of Wekmidar Village, Malacca Regency which is known as an accompaniment to the Bidu Elele dance and singing in the Meno Bidu traditional ceremony (Matchmaking Ceremony). In this modern era, the Raraun musical instrument is given little attention by artists and is rarely produced. This research focuses on the process of making and playing techniques for the Raraun musical instrument. In the problem formulation, there is a process for making Raraun musical instruments which is a long process. The following formulation is a technique for playing the Raraun musical instrument which is played using the strumming technique, namely plucking the strings by sounding all the strings or often known as Kheris in the local language. This research aims to analyze how to make and describe the techniques for playing the Raraun musical instrument in the Wekmidar Village community. This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach to collect data from interviews, documentation regarding the process of making and playing techniques for traditional Raraun musical instruments. The research method used is the concept of ethnography as a basis for cultural studies to examine groups of people in terms of behavior and social interactions in their own native environment. In the cultural aspect of the Wekmidar Village community, the Raraun has an important role in the Meno Bidu traditional ceremony and the Bidu Elele Dance where the Raraun is the key musical instrument in the procession. From the results of the interview with Mr. Videlis Nahak Bria, it can be concluded that traditional Raraun musical instrument craftsmen are rarely found in Malacca Regency, especially in Wekmidar Village due to the lack of regeneration and the willingness of individual people in the community to learn the process of making Raraun musical instruments. The study of organology and playing techniques for Raraun musical instruments can be a resource for the Wekmidar Village community and the wider community to make and study Raraun musical instruments. Raraun is a traditional musical instrument from Malacca Regency which is local wisdom resulting from community creativity and as a cultural marker or artifact that needs to be preserved. Therefore, this research is a form and effort to preserve the Raraun musical instrument so that the existence of the Raraun can be maintained among the people of Malacca Regency and especially in Wekmidar Village and known to a wide audience.
