Abstract

Bonet is one of the oldest dances on the island of Timor. Bonet is an art which in its presentation involves several artistic elements, namely dance, literary art and musical art (singing). There is a lot of singing in the Bonet dance. The theme of the song depends on the context of the event taking place. One of the songs in the Bonet dance is the Maneak Mes Biinmafo song. This song was performed by the Paisanaunu studio at the Bonet competition on the occasion of the anniversary of the city of Kefa. Even though the Bonet dance is often performed in the community, some people do not have a good understanding of the Bonet dance. The main problems in this research are (1) What is the process of presenting the Maneak Mes Biinmafo song? (2) What is the meaning of the Maneak Mes Biinmafo song? This research aims to (1) describe the process of presenting the Maneak Mes Biinmafo song: (2) identify the meaning of the Maneak Mes Biinmafo song. This research was conducted using a qualitative approach and the method used was ethnography. Data collection techniques use interviews, observation and documentation. Research data was analyzed qualitatively. The results of the research show that (1) the process of presenting the Maneak Mes Biinmafo song is that the male and female dancers form a semicircle. This song is presented in succession, starting with an initial call by the male singer and repeated by the female singer. After that, the male singer sings the first verse, then the female singer repeats the same verse in different notation. This process is repeated until the last verse; (2) The meaning contained in the song Maneak Mes Biinmafo is an emotive meaning related to feelings and reactions found in the first and second verses. The connotative meaning related to the association of feelings spoken or heard is found in the third, fourth and fifth poems, while the cognitive meaning related to the word or object referred to based on component analysis is found in all the poems in the Maneak Mes Biinmafo song.
