Abstract

The aim of this research was to assess the grasp of students on mathematical concepts related to comparison problems in class VII SMP. This particular study adopts a qualitative descriptive approach. The participants involved in the research were three students from class VII A at SMPK St. Yoseph Noelbaki, categorized based on their mathematical abilities - high, medium, and low. Selection of participants was carried out by evaluating their performance in the Midterm Assessment and consulting with the subject teacher. The tools utilized for this study included questions focusing on mathematical understanding abilities and guidelines for conducting interviews. Analysis of the data encompassed validation of the data and drawing meaningful conclusions. The credibility of the data was ensured through time triangulation. Subsequent to data collection, the researchers meticulously examined the responses to the mathematical understanding questions and interview outcomes to gauge the students' proficiency in mathematical comprehension. The findings revealed that students with high mathematical abilities excelled in test questions and demonstrated a comprehensive understanding of mathematical concepts, procedures, and principles. On the other hand, students with moderate mathematical abilities struggled with certain test questions, fulfilling only two indicators - conceptual and procedural understanding. Similarly, students with low mathematical abilities faced challenges in completing the test and did not meet the required indicators for mathematical understanding.
