Abstract

The study was conducted to answer problems as follow (1) What categories of teacher talk and student talk use in classroom interaction? (2) Who is more dominant during the teaching and learning process in classroom, teacher talk or student talk? Based on the problems, the objectives of this study are, (1)To find out and to know the kinds teacher talk in teaching learning process (2)To find out and to know the dominance of either the teacher talk and the student talk. The method that used in taking the data was Normative Survey Method or descriptive study, where the data were taken by directly observing classroom interaction of teacher and students. The instrument used in gathering the data for this study were classroom observation and videotaping. The subjects of this study were the teacher and students of classVIIIB of SMPK St.Maria Asumptha-Kupang. The result and finding of this study are as follows (1) there were 7 categories of teacher talks occurred in class VIIIB of SMPK St.Maria Asumptha Kupang. The categories of teacher talk are asking question (29,15%), giving direction (10,99%), giving information (4,48%), repeating student response verbatim (0,67%), praising or encourage (0,22%), and cricizes student behavior ( 0,22%). (2) there were 4 categories of student talks occurred in classVIIIB of SMPK St.Maria Asumptha Kupang. The categories of student talk are : student response choral (1,79%), Student initiated (26,68%), student response specific (3,36%) silence (10,76%). (3) The teacher used direct and indirect influence on the same level of frequency. (4) The frequency of turn of teacher talk is more dominant than student talk during teaching learning process where the total turn of teacher talk is 256 cases and the total turn of students is 190 cases. (5) most of responses of student were given in choral. Responses individually were less than group response. (6) Both teacher and student were active in teaching and learning process. Therefore, the writer gives the suggestion to teacher, students and next researcher. (1) The English Teacher is suggested to increase interest of students in learning English, the English teacher should give praises or encouragement to make students active during English class. Teacher also has to make some jokes so students don’t get bored easily. Teacher should speak louder and give more individual question so sho/he can increase student’s acquisition in learning English. (2) The eight grade student of SMPK - St. Maria Asumptha – Kupang should be more active to speak in classroom because from the observation seems that the teacher tends to talk more than students and tried to use English language during the teaching and learning process. (3) The Next Researcher are suggested to pay attention to teacher and students interaction during teaching learning process. He/she need to take notes during the process of teaching learning so he/she will be easier when coding the categories of teacher talk and student talk occurring in classroom interaction. Hopefully, the nexr research will give a better result.
