Abstract

Geographically, Indonesia is an archipelagic country with a much larger ocean area than its land area. This is reflected in the length of the coastline which reaches around 81,000 km throughout the archipelago, as well as the ocean area that can be utilized with an area of 5.8 million km². With these conditions, Indonesia's potential in utilizing fisheries and marine resources is very large. The coastal area is the meeting area between the ocean and land. On land, this area is still influenced by the characteristics of the sea, for example, the ebb and flow of sea water, sea breezes, and salty water. And the coastal area is developing into a residential area. Settlements located on the coast are villages where most of the population works as fishermen. The fishing village community generally has characteristics as a traditional society with relatively low socio-economic conditions and education levels. This kind of social condition makes it difficult for them to meet the need for decent housing. The settlements located on the coast are villages where most of the residents work as fishermen. The fishing village community generally has characteristics as a traditional community with relatively low socio-economic conditions and education levels. These social conditions make it difficult for them to meet the need for decent housing. Makfaho Village is a fishing village located on the coastline of the Atapupu Sea, in the northern outskirts of Atambua City. This village is part of Kenebibi Village, Kakuluk Mesak District. This village has great potential in seafood production, as shown by the presence of a Fish Auction Place (TPI) that attracts many buyers from outside the village. However, in the development of sustainable settlements, there is interaction between economic, social, and environmental systems. Unfortunately, settlements inhabited by lower-middle class people often face difficulties in achieving a balance between these three pillars. Even though they live near abundant natural resources, the conditions of their settlements are often lacking. Therefore, the Determination of Makfaho Fisherman's Village Area with Sustainable Architecture should focus on efforts to minimize negative impacts on the environment by implementing efficiency in the use of materials, energy, space, and holistic ecosystem development. The basic approach of Sustainable Architecture includes energy conservation and the application of ecological aspects in the design of the built environment, by utilizing theory, science, and building styles that are designed and built according to the principles of sustainable architecture.
