Abstract

It aims to answer the following questions: (1) What are the types of grammatical errors encountered by the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 in writing procedure text? (2) What is the most frequent grammatical error made by the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 in writing procedure text? The objectives of the study are: (1) to identify and describe types of grammatical errors encountered by the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 in writing procedure text. (2) to identify and describe the most frequent grammatical error made by the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 in writing procedure text. The type of this study is qualitative. The method applied in this study is descriptive method because it describes students’ grammatical errors in writing procedure text systematically and clearly. The sample of the research were 20 students from science 5 of tenth grade. The writer also obtained data using writing task by asking the students to choose one of two given topics and wrote a procedure text. The obtained data then analyzed according to types of error in surface startegy taxonomy. The data analysis showed that, 1) The errors committed by the tenth grade students of SMAN 2 Kupang inthe school year 2018/2019 were misformation 33 (40%), omission31 (38%), addition7 (9%), misordering 5 (6%) and some sentences that cannot be classified into surface strategy taxonomy called miscellanous errors with 6 (7%) cases from the total 82 errors. 2) The most grammatical error made by students was misformation. Based on the result of this study, the writer gives some suggestions to English teachers and students, that the teacher should warn students about the importance of grammar rules in writing and teach them how to construct good sentences and that the students should study more about grammar and apply grammar rules more often in their writing.
