The objectives of the study are (1) To find out the ability level of the tenth-grade students of SMAN 2 Kupang in writing descriptive text (2) To find out the difficulties encountered by the tenth-grade students of SMAN 2 Kupang in writing descriptive text (3) To find out whether or not the tenth-grade students of SMAN 2 Kupang able to write a descriptive text. The method used in this study was descriptive method. The aim of this method is to give or explain a situation which is observed while this research is done. The subject of this study was the tenth-grade students of SMAN 2 Kupang (language class). The total number of language class was 26. The writer chose all students to be the sample of this study, but the writer only test 20 students because only 20 students were present in the class. The instrument used in this study was writing a descriptive text. The collected data were analyzed on three aspects of writing, namely grammar, vocabulary, and form. The result of this study shows that the tenth-grade students of SMAN 2 Kupang are able to write a descriptive text with the level of ability classified as GOOD (10.35). There is no student who gets highest score 16-18 (excellent). There are 13 students (65%) who get the score 10-12 (good). There are 7 students (35%) who get score 7-9 (average). There are no students who get score 13-15 (very good), 4-6 (below average) and 3 (bad). These scores were given by using analytic method offered by John Anderson. There were many errors made by the students. As their difficulties encountered by the students, they are grammar or word order, followed by vocabulary, diction, spelling, and punctuation. Therefore the writer suggest the teacher of SMAN 2 Kupang to pay more attention on the teaching of grammar especially tenses (the use of to be) choice of word, punctuation and spelling, choice of structure and vocabulary which is appropriate, because many errors are found on these aspects.
