Abstract

This study was held to find the answer of two questions. (1)What are the grammatical errors in writing English composition commited by the eighth grade students of SMPN 10Kupang in the school year 2018/2019? (2)What is the most common grammatical errors in writingEnglish composition commited by the eighth grade students of SMPN 10Kupang in the school year 2018/2019. The method used in this study was descriptive method. The aim of the method is to explain a situation which is observed while this researchwas done. The subject of this study was the eight grade students of SMPN 10Kupang in the school year 2018/2019. The total number of languageclass students who joined in this research is 10. The instrument used by the writer to compile the data was written test. The writer gave twotopics to the students, namely My Interesting Experience and My Holiday.The students were asked to write recount text. They were asked to compoused 2 pharagraphs. The writer allocated 60 minutes to do the writing test. The result of the study indicates the following facts: (1)The grammatical errors in writing English composition commited by the eighth grade students of SMPN 10Kupang in the scholl year 2018/2019.Weremisformation, omission, misordering, and addition. The total number of errors was 32. Errors in misformation were 16, and erros in omission were , errors in misordering were 3 anderrors in addition were 7. (2)The most common grammatical errors in writingEnglish composition commited by the eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 was misformation (16), specifically misformation of tense. Based on the result of the study, the suggestions are porposed.(a)The teacher should encourage the students to write recount text and the teacher should teach the students how to write a good text especially in writing recounttext and give the students chanceto practice. (b)The English teachers should pay more attention on the students’ grammatical errors by providing practices on grammatical aspects particularly tense form inwriting recount text. (c)The students should learn how to make agood writing and frequently. (d)Studying intensively focus on grammar particularly tense form in writing recount text, because grammatical rules of English play an important role to convey and receive the message. It makes the message get across easly.
